Are you a hiring manager looking for your dream hire?
As everyone knows, the best talent is in high demand. A recruiter can help you navigate this competitive landscape with confidence, uncovering top-tier candidates who align with your company’s culture, vision and goals.
I’ve enjoyed working with clients across industries to find the best talent for their teams. I’d like to share some of my top tips for creating a great partnership to find your dream hire:

1. Be Clear About What You Need
A recruiter is only as effective as the information you provide. Be transparent about your must-haves versus nice-to-haves, and share insight into your company culture.
I like to have kick-off meetings with clients to discuss the responsibilities of their open roles as well as what they’re looking for in terms of experience and other attributes. Instead of saying “We’re looking for a Financial Controller with accounting experience,” be more specific. A client recently gave me a spot-on description of the role that helped us place an excellent match:
“We’re looking for a Financial Controller with at least 8 years of experience in a manufacturing environment. They must have expertise in cost accounting, financial reporting, and FP&A. Strong knowledge of SAP is required, and prior experience leading a team is a must. While a CPA is preferred, it’s not a deal-breaker. Most importantly, they need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on role, as we are an entrepreneurial private equity-owned company.”
It’s also a good idea to reflect on past hiring successes and challenges. What traits have worked well in previous hires? What gaps exist in your team?
2. Choose the Right Recruiting Partner
Not all recruiters are created equal. Find one who understands your industry, your company's unique needs, and has a strong network of top-tier talent. The best recruiters don’t just wait for resumes to come their way. They proactively seek out top talent. Ensure that your recruiter has strong relationships with both active and passive candidates to maximize your hiring options.

3. Trust Their Expertise
A recruiter’s expertise can give you a strategic advantage in securing the best talent. They are an investment in your business’s long-term success, bringing you a wealth of knowledge about hiring trends, compensation benchmarks, and candidate expectations. Lean into their insights, whether it’s adjusting job requirements, improving your interview process, or making a competitive offer. They can help you shine a light on your company’s strength and make you a more attractive employer.

4. Move Quickly with Top Talent
If a recruiter presents a strong candidate, keep the process moving. Delays in scheduling interviews or making offers can mean losing out on the perfect hire. I once had a technology client looking to hire a CFO. They loved the first person that I introduced, but wanted to meet other candidates to make sure that this was the right fit. I advised them to keep the interview process moving quickly, so each candidate met multiple people on the same day. Once the client honed in on the best candidate, they made an offer quickly. This was critical, as the candidate was interviewing and expecting multiple offers. The client was decisive when they realized that their favorite candidate could be snapped up by a competitor.
5. Think Beyond the Resume
A skilled recruiter will assess the whole candidate to ensure you’re hiring someone that will be a good fit for your company. Consider the big picture. What makes your organization attractive to candidates? Share with your recruiters. Strong employer branding and a compelling company culture can make a big difference in attracting top-tier talent.

6. Consider a Long-Term Relationship
Building a lasting relationship with a recruiter can streamline your hiring process for future needs. When a recruiter truly understands your company, they can proactively bring exceptional candidates your way, even before a role officially opens. I have staffed whole departments for clients, as they know I understand both the technical and interpersonal skills needed to be effective.
We maintain long-term relationships with candidates as well, keeping track of their career progress. With 30 years of recruiting experience, I have candidates who become clients and then candidates again. As I accompany them throughout their career, I work to bring talented professionals, clients and candidates, together to unleash magic.
Final Thoughts
Finding your dream hire doesn’t have to be a daunting process. A strategic partnership with the right recruiter can help you tap into a broader talent pool, streamline the hiring process, and secure the best possible candidate for your team.
